A new phenomenon is reported whereby an after-effect of adaptation to unidimensional sinusoidal gratings, the spatial frequency shift, can be obtained at test orientations which are orthogonal to the adapting stimulus. This after-effect is not accompanied by a change in contrast sensitivity for the adapting frequency at this orientation, and it differs in its spatial frequency tuning from the spatial frequency shift obtained when the test and adapting orientations are the same. Under the experimental conditions employed to demonstrate this effect, the magnitude of the change in perceived periodicity is shown to depend on the contrast of the test grating. © 1979.
