ON THE TEMPERATURE-DEPENDENCE OF THE SURFACE ELASTIC-CONSTANT K13

摘要
The temperature dependence of the surface elastic constant K13 is analysed. It is found that the ratio between K13 and the usual bulk elastic constant near T(c) is nearly proportional to 1/S, where S is the nematic scalar order parameter. This result has been obtained by means of symmetry considerations, and by showing that the intermolecular potential responsible for the nematic liquid crystal phase does not have to be bilinear in the tensor order parameter. Possible consequences for the temperature surface transitions are discussed too.
