A SCANNING TUNNELING MICROSCOPE STUDY OF THE ELECTROCHEMICAL POLYMERIZATION OF PERCHLORATE-DOPED POLYPYRROLE ON HIGHLY ORIENTED PYROLYTIC-GRAPHITE

摘要
We have used scanning tunneling microscopy to determine the growth morphology for very thin coverages of perchlorate-doped polypyrrole on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite. For samples with nominal coverage 8-40 angstrom the polymer typically grows in widely separated islands. The islands nucleate preferentially on or near steps in the graphite surface and not on the large planar regions of the substrate. On a fine scale the islands are found to be composed of tendrils of typical diameter 10-30 angstrom. Regions of orientationally ordered polymer ridges are also observed in these samples.
