Resistometric Analysis of Formation of a New Phase in Supersaturated Solid Solution of Iron in Aluminium

Resistivity measurements have been made on a number of samples of ultrarapidly quenched aluminium containing up to 4.2 at% iron during their annealing. A phase transition occurring at about 300 degrees C has been interpreted as due to the liberation of the metastable phase Al6Fe within the alloy. A value of (1.2 +/- 0.4) eV has been derived for the activation energy of this transition. No variation of this value with iron concentration has been observed in the interval 0.67 to 1.32 at%.
