We have studied the propagation of 1-GHz magnetoelastic waves in a 〈110〉 oriented YIG rod. One-port echoes show an oscillation in amplitude as a function of magnetic field similar to that reported previously by Kirchner. Two-port echoes are very strong and oscillate in antiphase with one-port echoes. The results can be simply interpreted in terms of the elastic anisotropy of YIG. From the period of the oscillations and the internal magnetic field distribution measured by the magnetoelastic resonance technique, we deduce that the elastic anisotropy in YIG is only about two-thirds as great as that measured by Clark and Strakna. This conclusion has been verified by ultrasonic measurements, but the results reveal a small variation (∼1/2%) in the absolute velocities of sound in YIG of different origin-this may be related to the presence of Pb impurities which cause departures from the x-ray density by ∼1/2%. © 1969 The American Institute of Physics.
