CO2 LASER-INDUCED CHEMI-LUMINESCENCE IN SF6-HYDROCARBON MIXTURES - DEPENDENCE ON LASER FLUENCE

A pulsed CO2 laser is used to induce infrared multiple photon dissociation (IRMPD) in SF6/CH4 gas mixtures, yielding both visible (due to C2 and CH molecular fragments) and infrared (due to vibrationally excited HF) chemiluminescence. The dependence of luminescence intensities on laser fluence is found to be markedly different in the two cases, reflecting the relatively complex mechanism of formation of electronically excited C2 and CH. In the limit of low pressure and fluence, a cubic fluence dependence is observed for the infrared (HF) luminescence, in close agreement with that for IRMPD itself. © 1979.
