MODIFICATION OF INSULIN RESPONSE AND ALLOXAN DIABETES BY HYPOTHALAMIC LESIONS IN RATS

The effects of hypothalamic lesions on the insulin sensitivity of adrenal demedullated rats and on the urinary excretion of glucose and nitrogen of alloxan diabetic rats have been studied. It was shown that rostral hypothalamic lesions produced a moderate enhancement of insulin response when compared with adrenal-demedullated animals without lesions. Similar lesions reduced the glycosuria in 6 of 8 alloxan-diabetic rats. The lesion-induced reduction in glycosuria was not affected by administration of 5 mg/kg of growth hormone for 4 days, whereas corticotrophin, 5 mg/kg for 4 days, produced a rise in glycosuria to the pre-lesion levels. © 1969 S.
