The effects of stationary phase film thickness, column temperature, and carrier gas flow rates on resolution, zone capacity, and solvent peak management are considered for the high-speed analysis of impurities in common solvents. Retention times generally are in the range of 2 to 20 s. Thin-film columns, low temperatures, and high flow rates are usually preferred. Thicker film columns are useful for very weakly retained impurities. Both normal and inverse solvent effects are more significant for the short columns and short retention times. The normal solvent effect can be used to increase the efficiency of solvent flush procedures. Loss of resolution from the inverse solvent effect limits the maximum sample size for impurities which elute before the solvent peak.
