Structural changes of alkaline metmyoglobin compared to neutral metmyoglobin have been determined by a three-dimensional X-ray diffraction analysis. Alkaline metmyoglobin crystals proved, however, to be somewhat unstable under X-irradiation. Exposure of crystals to xenon stabilized them thus permitting the necessary extended X-ray exposures. Structural changes were determined by inspection of difference electron density maps with subsequent refinement by a difference least-squares method. The results show two xenon binding sites in addition to a number of structural rearrangements. © 1969.
