LOAD EFFECT IN OPEN-TUBULAR GLC - RELATIONSHIPS AMONG METHYL TRANS-11-OCTADECENOATE AND CIS ISOMERS WITH SIMILAR RETENTION TIMES

In the GLC separation of isomeric cis monoethylenic fatty acids on open-tubular columns with polar coatings it is known that an excessive proportion of some components can exert a retarding “load effect” on adjacent later-eluting isomers. Study of ruminant fats containing trans-vaccenic acid, of other natural fats, and of reference materials, indicates that structurally dissimilar materials such as tram: acids in a mixture of eis isomers do not cause this effect. It is proposed that the bad effect is due only to the structural similarities among the interacting materials. Other matters relating to GLC of monoethylenic acid isomers and their identification are discussed. © 1969, Oxford University Press. All rights reserved.
