ELECTROCHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF GLASS MEMBRANES UN MOLTEN SALTS

The electrode selectivity of Corning Code 7740 borosilicate glass in molten sodium nitrate-potassium nitrate was measured over the temperature range 358-421°. The temperature coefficient of the selectivity was found to be 14.0 ± 0.7 kcal/mol. Equilibrium-sorption studies were found to be consistent with the assumption that the borosilicate glass was a two-phase system. The Code 7740 borosilicate and several other glass compositions were found to be sodium selective in molten sodium nitrate-potassium nitrate. These findings are compared with results in the literature.
