OBSERVATION OF PREPHASE TRANSITIONAL PHENOMENA ON AN AU(110) SURFACE

摘要
Temperature-dependent polar angular spectra of 4.6 keV neon ions scattered by an Au(110) surface are measured and analyzed by means of a three-particle model with which the scattering cross section is calculated as a function of the angle of incidence. From the analysis, the room temperature surface Debye temperature is extracted. The missing-row model is confirmed. Furthermore, it is shown that the threshold for vacancy formation in the [1̄10] strings lies 120 K below the (1 × 2)-(1 × 1) phase transition temperature (650 K) and that the threshold for the formation of atomic steps on the surface lies around the phase transition temperature. In addition, the order in the [001] direction is found to change drastically around 650 K. © 1990.
