EMPIRICAL COMPARISONS OF CALCULATION PROCEDURES FOR ESTIMATING ANNOYANCE OF JET AIRCRAFT FLYOVERS

Thirty-five calculation procedures for relating annoyance of jet aircraft flyovers to physical parameters of the sounds were evaluated using the psychophysical method of constant stimulus differences. The large number of procedures evaluated is due to the interest in applying corrections for a discrete frequency above the broad-band noise and for duration of the noise to basic evaluation approaches such as Stevens' loudness level [1] and Kryter's perceived noise level [6]. In addition, two methods of identifying the extent of a discrete frequency above the broad-band noise were investigated. Due to the variability encountered in human responce studies, several of the procedures are considered acceptable for application purposes. However, the most precise procedure was loudness level (Mark VI) by S. S. Stevens [1] with a tone correction recommended by J. W. Little [2]. © 1969.
