INCREASING HYDROGEN-SULFIDE CONCENTRATION AND TRACE-METAL BEHAVIOR IN THE ANOXIC BALTIC WATERS

Depth profiles for O2/H2S, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu and Cd are presented for the Gotland Deep, based on samples collected in 1981 and 1985. Stability constants (K1KSO) for the equilibrium MS(s) + H+ ⇌ M2+ + HS- have been calculated from the solubility products. This eliminates the error in using too low values for the protonization constant of the sulfide ion. The concentration of trace metals in the sulfidic bottom water appears to be determined by scavenging with iron sulfide. The amount of trace metal scavenged seems to be related to the value of K1KSO and the strength of the metal-sulfide bond. The concentration of dissolved iron in the bottom water agrees with an equilibrium calculation with FeS and FeHS2- as the main dissolved species. © 1990.
