INCLINATION DEPENDENCE OF GALAXY BRIGHTNESSES, DIAMETERS AND AVERAGE SURFACE BRIGHTNESSES

Several new estimators of inclination dependence of galaxy brightnesses, diameters and average surface brightnesses have been introduced. Estimators from the literature are also reviewed and some of them are shown to be biased. The analysis presented takes into account selection effects which take place in the two most popular kinds of galaxy samples: magnitude- and diameter-limited. For spirals no inclination dependence on diameters and a strong (decreasing) dependence for brightnesses have been found, which supports the 'very dusty' scenario for these galaxies. As an illustrative example computations have been done for the CfA redshift sample of galaxies (which is magnitude-limited) since, as herein shown, estimators of inclination dependence of galaxy diameters and brightnesses need galaxies with known distances.
