EFFECT OF DIETARY LIPIDS ON GROWTH AND TISSUE FATTY-ACID COMPOSITION OF GRAY MULLET (MUGIL-CEPHALUS)

摘要
1. Four experimental diets supplemented with either 8% fish oil, corn oil, soybean oil or linseed oil and a fat free diet were fed to groups of Mugil cephalus (initial mean weight 0.4 g) held at 20-degrees-C for 12 weeks. 2. The lowest growth and performance parameters were observed with the fat free diet. Body composition was also affected by the type of diet. 3. Levels of tissue omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids were found to be positively correlated with their respective dietary levels. No correlation could be found between dietary and tissue lipids in the cases of saturated fatty acids and fatty acids belonging to 18:1-omega-9 series. 4. Mugil cephalus appears to possess DELTA-9 and DELTA-6 desaturases. The activity of other desaturases, if present, appears to be very low. 5. The results of growth and fatty acid composition are discussed in relation to the feeding habits of mullet.
