1. 1. Gangliosides of several extraneural tissues of rat, rabbit and pig were assayed by determining lipid-bound neuraminic acid. Its amount in these tissues ranges from 3 to 21 mg per 100 g dry weight; these values correspond to 2-10% of the lipid-bound neuraminic acid in the brain. 2. 2. Thin-layer Chromatographic patterns of the extraneural gangliosides are at least as complex as the cerebral ganglioside pattern. The distinctions between the thin-layer Chromatographic patterns of different tissues are remarkable. The Chromatographic mobilities of the dominating extraneural gangliosides are greater than those of the major gangliosides of the brain. However, slow-moving gangliosides are also found in all extraneural tissues. © 1969.
