ELECTRICAL-CONDUCTIVITY OF SOLUTION-GROWN POLY(2,6-DIMETHYL-1,4-PHENYLENE OXIDE) FILMS

The electrical conductivity of solution-grown poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) films sandwiched between planar metal electrodes was investigated at voltages between 50 and 2000 V as a function of thickness from 36 to 70-mu-m at room temperature (298 K), and as a function of temperature in the range 298-353 K at a constant thickness of 70-mu-m. Two distinct regions of conduction are apparent: ohmic conduction at low field (region I), the slope of the log current voltage characteristics being about one; and non-ohmic conduction at higher fields (region II), the slope being about two. Space-charge-limited conduction (SCLC) has been suggested as the dominant mechanism of conduction at high fields.
