摘要
This paper analyses two methods for estimating the power of sensor noise in array processing: the so-called 'eigenvalue method' and (the generalization of) a 'linear method' recently proposed in the literature. The eigenvalue method is proved to be statistically efficient. The linear method is shown to be more efficient than the eigenvalue method from the computational standpoint, but less efficient statistically. As the number of sensors in the array increases, the computational advantage of the linear method increases, but its statistical efficiency decreases. Some applications of the noise power estimates considered in this paper are also discussed. In particular, it is shown that the 'linear method' can be utilized as a first step in a procedure for source location, based on linear operations only.
