THE INITIAL AC SUSCEPTIBILITY OF GD/W(110) FILMS IN UHV - A NEW METHOD TO INVESTIGATE MAGNETISM IN ULTRATHIN FILMS

The ac susceptibility (chi(ac)) of a 300 angstrom Gd film grown on W(110) has been investigated in-situ under UHV conditions. A full analysis of chi(ac) is given in which the domain and paramagnetic signals are clearly separated. A theoretical simulation of the para- and ferromagnetic contributions allow a precise discussion of the transition temperature, the Hopkinson maximum and the anisotropy energy K(eff). It is at least a factor of ten larger than that of polycrystalline bulk Gd. K(eff) follows a power law in (T(c) - T)kappa with 3beta < kappa < 5beta. Annealing the as-grown film decreases K(eff)(T) by a factor of five.
