DYE-SENSITIZED OXIDATION OF TETRAMETHYLPIPERIDINES (HALS) TO N-OXYLS

Flash photolysis and electron paramagnetic. resonance (EPR) measurements show that, at high concentrations (1.28 M in methanol, p(H)(M) 11.3) of 4-hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine (HTEMP, hindered amine light stabilizer, HALS), the oxidation product 4-hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-N-oxyl (TEMPOL) is formed according to a type I (radical) mechanism (and not via the competing type II (singlet oxygen) photo-oxygenation mechanism) when the dyes 9-methyllumiflavin and thionine are used as sensitizers. These dyes exhibit high electron affinity in photoreactions.
