摘要
While women's independent migration represents a major trend in contemporary international labour flows, attempts to conceptualise gender as an essential element for understanding population movement have been relatively recent. With reference to the predominantly female labour migration from the Philippines to Italy, this paper gives a synopsis of the main theoretical approaches to migration and their relevance to gender-selectivity, It then reviews current debates around the issues of gender, the household and migration, and proposes a research agenda based on the expansion of the household strategies approach to include the actions of the state in both sending and receiving countries and the role of migrant networks.
