Comprehensive investigations on solvent extraction of Polish high volatile subbituminous and bituminous coals in a 41 batch stirred autoclave were carried out, using prehydrogenated anthracene oil as a start-up solvent and successive recycle solvents without molecular hydrogen or catalysts. In the experiments using recycle solvents recovered by vacuum distillation of filtrates and low-temperature carbonization of filter cakes, a steady decrease in coal conversion and extract yield, caused by a continuous decrease in hydrogen donor capacity of the recycled solvent, was observed. Successive recycle solvents were enriched with hydrogen-donating compounds by the addition of a selected fraction of catalytically hydrogenated coal extract, which affected the coal conversion and extract yield by stabilizing the chemical group composition of successive recycle solvents.
