PROSPECTS FOR FUNGAL BIOREMEDIATION OF TNT MUNITION WASTE

Munitions wastes constitute a major problem for the military. In addition to their explosive properties, these compounds are biological poisons, and their accumulation in the environment has damaged many ecosystems. Until recently, there was evidence for microbial reduction but not mineralization of trinitrotoluene (TNT) and its transformation products. This paper reviews the literature on metabolism of TNT and compares the classical studies on microbial biotransformation and biodegradation with more recent studies on the successful use of anaerobic bacteria and white rot fungi for mineralizing TNT.
