TRYPANOSOMATID PARASITES OF PLANTS (PHYTOMONAS)

Trypanosomatids of the genus Phytomonas have been known as parasites of lactiferous plants since the beginning of the century and have been the subject of renewed attention in the past decade, as they are now recognized to be pathogenic in plants of economic interest. Nevertheless, information about these flagellates is still scanty. Until recently they had not been cultured, or studied biochemically or ultrastructurally. Phytophagous insects are their putative vectors but exactly which species are involved remains to be established. There are many unanswered questions about the taxonomic identification, pathogenecity and transmission of Phytomonas spp as well as about their natural hosts and reservoirs; this article by Erney Camargo, Pieter Kastelein and Isaac Roitman highlights some of them. © 1990.
