Al and Fe layers evaporated on Si/SiO2 substrates have been mixed by irradiation with 100 keV krypton ions at low temperature (150 K) at a fluence of 1 x 10(16) ions/cm2. The structural evolution of the irradiated samples after annealing at different temperatures has been followed by conversion electron Mossbauer spectroscopy (CEMS). The enthalpy of the structural transformations has been determined by differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) measurements. We observe a transition from the amorphous Al-Fe phase, formed by ion mixing, to a quasicrystalline icosahedral Al-Fe phase upon annealing up to 573 K and a transition to the crystalline Al6Fe phase upon annealing at 673 K.
