N2 VEGARD-KAPLAN BAND SYSTEM IN AURORA ROTATIONAL TEMPERATURES AND VIBRATIONAL POPULATIONS

摘要
The rotational structure of the Vegard-Kaplan bands of N2 has been successfully synthesized. The rotational temperatures of the Vegard-Kaplan bands of N2 determined from the auroral spectra are in the range, 900-2200°K. The close agreement between the N2 Vegard-Kaplan temperatures and the N2+ first negative temperatures suggests rotational equilibrium in the A3∑u+ state. The variations in the relative populations of the vibrational levels of the A3∑u+ state are consistent with the cascading mechanism of Broadfoot and Hunten. © 1969.
