Drawing on insights from Chern-Simons theory, we give an elementary derivation for the ''Peierls substitution'' used in projecting dynamics in a strong magnetic field onto the lowest Landau level. The projection of wave functions and the ordering prescription for the projected Hamiltonian is explained.
