THE VOIGT EFFECT IN A DILUTE ATOMIC VAPOR

We give a brief account of a density matrix treatment of an atom in a dilute vapour subject to a magnetic field acting perpendicular to the direction of propagation of plane-polarized monochromatic light of arbitrary intensity in the vicinity of an absorption transition of type J = 0 --> J = 1. The form of the Voigt rotation (the apparent rotation in the plane of polarization of light initially polarized at 45-degrees to the magnetic field direction) is given for various intensities, and justified in terms of simple physical mechanisms. Collisional effects are included within the context of the impact approximation.
