Poly(N,N-di-n-butylaniline) (PBA) was easily obtained by means of the electro-oxidation of N,N-di-n-butylaniline in acidic media. Only the redox wave of I- was observed on the PBA-film-coated electrode; Fe(edta)-, Fe2+, [Fe(CN)6]4-, Mn2+, hydroquinone, Tl+, and Br- were not electroactive on these electrodes. While PBA itself was an insulator and electroinactive, it became conducting only when it was used for the electro-oxidation of I-. PBA had anion exchangeability due to its structure with positively charged sites as quaternary ammonium groups in the polymeric backbone. The PBA-film-coated electrode, which incorporated the oxidized products of I- electrostatically, showed selective potential response to dissolved I-.
