摘要
To assess the role of stroboscopy as a clinical tool in evaluation of hoarse patients, a prospective study of 195 videostroboscopies carried out in 146 patients is reported. Videostroboscopy contributed significant diagnostic information in 27.2% of the cases. It was instrumental in changing the diagnosis made by referring otolaryngologists in 15 cases (10%). This resulted in avoidance of surgery in six cases and nine cases referred to surgery instead of voice and medical therapy. There was a significant correlation between usefulness of stroboscopy and the quality of recording, the type of pathology, and the voice quality. Stroboscopy should be performed in selected patients suspected of vocal fold pathology. It is especially useful in serial examinations to help assess treatment progress.
