MEASUREMENT OF LOW CONCENTRATIONS OF MOISTURE BY FAST NEUTRON MODERATION

摘要
The fast neutron moderation technique is applied for the measurement of moisture content in materials in concentrations under 1 wt.%. With a 5 Ci plutonium-beryllium (PuBe) fast neutron source, the sensitivity for water (or other hydrogenous matter) determination approaches 0·1 wt.% as the lowe limit with 400 cm3 samples of either solids or liquids. The presence of inherent molecular hydrogen or strongly thermal neutron absorbing elements in the medium has no appreciable effect on the ability to analyze for such small concentrations of moisture. The method is particularly applicable to laboratory or plant quality control where moisture content must be determined to within specific limits. © 1969.
