GLASS-FORMATION AND CRYSTALLIZATION IN THE BI-SR-CA-CU-O SYSTEM

The glass formation boundaries were determined in the Bi2O3-SrO-CuO, Bi2O3-CaO-CuO and Bi2O3-SrO-CaO-CuO systems and in more complex compositions with PbO by the melt-quenching method. Using DTA, the glass transition temperature T(g), softening temperature T(s), crystallization temperature T(x) and the temperature range of melting were established. Some regions of composition in the Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O system were found where crystalline phases of the type Bi2Sr2Ca(n-1)Cu(n)O(x)(n = 1,2,3) were identified. A scheme is suggested to obtain superconducting glass-ceramics by pressing and thermal treatment (at 820-840-degrees-C) of amorphous powders.
