Quantative genetic analysis indicates substantial heritable variation in both the acceptance of a novel host by ovipositing Drosophila suboccidentalis Spcr. and in the number of eggs deposited by accepting females. The two traits are correlated in comparisons of family means, suggesting a common effect of genes affecting fecundity. Environmental and dominance variation accounted for 55% of phenotypic variance in egg numbers.
