NEW SPECTROSCOPIC EVIDENCE FOR MOLECULAR AGGREGATES OF RHODAMINE 6G IN AQUEOUS-SOLUTION AT HIGH-PRESSURE

Molecular aggregates of rhodamine 6G in aqueous solutions were studied by the measurement of absorption and fluorescence emission spectra, as well as fluorescence decay curves, all as a function of pressure. In moderately concentrated solutions (less than or equal to 7X10(-4) M), the fluorescence spectra revealed that the dimer was nonfluorescent up to 900 MPa. In more concentrated solutions (greater than or equal to 3X10(-3) M), a new absorption peak located at 477 nm, which was assigned to higher aggregates other than the dimer, was observed at high pressures. These higher aggregates were found to fluoresce with a new emission peak located at 650 nm. The photophysical properties of the higher aggregates are discussed.
