Predicted that food deprivation would increase the attractiveness of food for individuals of normal weight, but would not increase its attractiveness for overweight individuals. Grocery shopping in a supermarket was observed. Normal individuals bought more food if they were deprived than they did if they had recently eaten. Overweight individuals actually bought more food if they had recently eaten than they did if deprived. Shopping time was also measured, and it was found that normal individuals shopped more slowly than overweight individuals if deprived and more rapidly if they had recently eaten.
