ANTIFERROELECTRIC TRANSITION IN KOH(D) - A H-2 AND K-39 NMR-STUDY

The temperature variation of the K-39 and H-2 nuclear quadrupole coupling constants e2 qQ/h and eta in KOH and KOD have been measured from high field NMR powder patterns over a temperature range centered on the antiferroelectric transition for each compound. The temperature variation of T1 for H-2 in KOD exhibits a sharp minimum at the transition. The precipitous variation of the coupling at T(c) confirms both transitions as first order. The implications of the data for the deuteron (hydrogen) motion above the transition is discussed.
