This article discusses three lacunae of cognitive therapy: investigations of cognitive histories, levels of cognitions' accessibility, and interactions among cognitions. The role of cognitions in psychotherapy is described and ways in which psychoanalysis and cognitive therapy complement each other are discussed. The growing concern of cognitive psychology with levels of processing and preattentive mechanisms is shown to resemble certain directions within psychodynamic theory. By viewing personality as an open system, influenced by experiential inputs throughout life, certain theoretical convergences become evident and lay the groundwork for future research directions. © 1979 Plenum Publishing Corporation.
