A full linear model approach is presented for the analysis of PIXE spectra. The measured spectrum is presented as a sum of basis functions, which form a fixed set. The program EVE solves this deconvolution problem by the constrained LS method. Instead of solving only for the best solution, the program takes into account all possible solutions and computes the upper and lower limits of peak areas. Two different nonpolynomial approaches to background modelling are presented. These nonpolynomial background shapes are equally applicable to the thin and thick target spectra and are almost independent of experimental conditions. © 1990.
