The band properties of La3Ni2B2N3, the first superconducting member (T-c approximate to 13K) of a new family of layered boro-nitride quaternaries, have been calculated with the use of the linear augmented-plane-wave method. The results exhibit distinctive Ni-B-N s-p energy-band features near E(F) which are analogous to those identified previously as the origin of phonon-mediated superconductivity in the related lanthanide boro-carbides LnNi(2)B(2)C. In both families, broad (similar to 30 eV) s-p bands provide strong electron-phonon coupling near E(F) via high frequency boron a(1g) phonons that dynamically modulate the NiB4 tetrahedral bond angles, while the Ni(3d) electrons are relegated to a secondary role.
