REACTION OF N-DICHLOROMETHYLENE-N,N-DIMETHYLAMMONIUM CHLORIDE (VIEHES SALT) WITH HYDROXY COMPOUNDS - SYNTHESIS OF CARBONATES AND THIOCARBONATES

The reaction of Viehe's salt (Me2N+=CCl2 Cl-) with benzene-1, 2-diol, phenol, 2, 3-dimethylbutane-2, 3-diol and trans-cyclohexane-1, 2-diol gives stable salts which may be readily converted into the corresponding carbonates and thiocarbonates. Both cis- and trans-cyclohexane-1, 2-diol give salts which rearrange, albeit at different rates, to the same trans chloro carbamate. © 1979 Australian Journal of Chemistry. All rights reserved.
