INHIBITORY EFFECT OF LOCAL ANTIPSORIATIC AGENTS ON RESPIRATION OF HUMAN AND ANIMAL SKIN

Two effective local antipsoriatic agents, dithranol (anthralin, 1,8,9-anthratriol) and 6-hydroxy-2-oxobenzoxathiol were tested as to their influence on respiration of surviving human and animal (guinea pig, rat, mouse) skin. Oxygen consumption was measured with the Warburg technique. Both substances reveal an inhibitory effect on skin respiration. Dithranol proved to be ten times as active as 6-hydroxy-2-oxobenzoxathiol. This observation in vitro meets with the relative potency of the two drugs when applied on patches of chronic psoriasis for therapeutic use. 6-Hydroxy-2-oxobenzoxathiol.required a period of 30-60 min before inhibitory action on tissue respiration started. The presence of hydrocortison (30 μg/ml=10-4 m) in the test flask shortened this interval. In addition, hydrocortisone increased the inhibitory effect of 6-hydroxy-2-oxobenzoxathiol on respiration of human and animal skin in vitro. © 1969 Springer-Verlag.
