摘要
Quarks and leptons have emerged as elementary constituents of matter. To these may perhaps be added the field particles, or mediating agents, of a unified theory of the weak and electromagnetic forces and also those of a new theory of the strong (nuclear) force. This article briefly outlines some of the main items of evidence for this new picture and indicates a few of the many crucial questions to be answered. © 1979 Nature Publishing Group.
