MUCUS PRODUCTION IN CHRONICALLY INFECTED MIDDLE EAR - A HISTOLOGICAL AND HISTOCHEMICAL STUDY

One hundred biopsies of inflamed mucosa and infected polyps from diverse types of chronic otitis media were examined histologically and histochemically. Sixty biopsies showed stratified squamous metaplasia. Forty-seven biopsies showed intraepithelial granular mucus formation and 52 biopsies showed gland-like formation. The glands were larger and more numerous than normal, sometimes unusually so. The mucus gave a positive periodic Schiff reaction, positive Aldan Blue and colloid iron and showed metachromasia with toluidine blue. It is concluded that mucus found in the chronically infected middle ear originates in Situ from the secreting epithelium, as well as from hyperplastic mucus glands. © 1969, SAGE Publications.
