Cation-anion and solvent-anion interactions in solutions of lithium and tetrabutylammoniwn trifluoromethanesulfonate dissolved in eight solvents are studied using Raman and infrared vibrational spectroscopy. A plot of the frequency shifts of several anion modes against the electron pair acceptance polarity index E(T)(30) of the solvents suggests an electrophilic interaction between the solvent and the anion. The relative contributions of anion-cation interactions and anion-solvent interactions are estimated by measuring the splitting of the doubly degenerate SO3 antisymmetric stretching mode of the anion.
