The resuspension of a settled layer of particles under viscous flow conditions has been attributed to shear-induced dispersion processes arising from the interaction between particles as a suspension is sheared. Previous studies were confined to steady-state measurements of the height of a resuspending layer as a function of applied shear stress. In this paper we present dynamic measurements of the response of a suspension of negatively buoyant non-colloidal spheres to a step change in the applied shear rate. The time-dependent variation in observed viscosity is used to estimate the shear-induced effective diffusivity within the plane of shear and the hindered settling factor in sheared suspensions at concentrations between 20 and 50% by volume.
