DRAMATIC SOLVENT EFFECTS ON THIOXANTHONE FLUORESCENCE LIFETIME

Fluorescence lifetimes of thioxanthone (TX) and 3-carboxyethyl-7-methyl thioxanthone (ETX) were measured in several hydroxylic and non-hydroxylic solvents at room temperature. As reported previously by Dalton and Montgomery for TX in hydroxylic solvents, both phi(F) and tau(F) increase with solvent polarity. However, TX and ETX surprisingly satisfy the same linear relationship between phi(F) and tau(F) over a large range of solvent polarity from butyl acetate to glycol.
