摘要
Argues for an ethical conception of life more pluralist in reach than the ones on offer in much of the literature on welfare and development economics. This framework is then used on some crude data pertaining to what in 1970 were 50 of the world's poorest countries to get a sense of the distribution of well-being among them. This cross-section study of six important ingredients of the "aggregate well-being' of a society allows an assessment of whether, and in what way, they are associated with one another. The indices studied are: per capita national income, life expectancy at birth, infant survival rate, adult literacy rate, and indices of political and civil rights. -from Author
