Mean lives of several low-lying states in Mg27 were measured using the Doppler-shift-attenuation method. These levels, with measured mean lives, are 0.984 MeV [τ=(1.4±0.5)×10-12 sec], 1.69 MeV [τ=(1.3±0.5)×10-12 sec], and 1.94 MeV [τ=(1.4-0.4+0.6)×10-12 sec]. In addition, limits on the mean lives of the states at 3.48 and 3.56 MeV were obtained. The Mg26(d,p)Mg27 reaction with 2-MeV incident deuterons was used to populate levels in Mg27. The attempt to interpret the low-lying levels of Mg27 in terms of the strong-coupling rotational model is met with conflicting evidence concerning the membership of the ground-state rotational band. © 1969 The American Physical Society.
