TEMPERATURE AND THE RATE OF AGEING IN DROSOPHILA SUBOBSCURA

摘要
1. Exposure to a lethal temperature (37 degrees C) in moist air for a time which just fails to kill adult flies causes a heat coma from which they can fully recover. 2. This heat treatment can be repeated several times before the mortality rises appreciably, showing that if damage is done to the flies it is repairable. 3. The rate of ageing of flies is the same at 18.5 degrees C, 24.8 degrees C and 28.8 degrees C; but at 28.8 degrees C death in young, vigorous flies occurs sooner than expected, probably because it is not a viable temperature. 4. The rate of dying is temperature-dependent.
